4/25/2024 0 Comments End of busy season (4/25/24)Been over two months since I last wrote. Since then, I have put some more work into my collection due to release I would like to say Monday. I was originally going to call it "Bringing Out the Dead", but I have now opted to call it "FCOM Communications Discharge Manual". I've gone for the new name because I feel like the former was too romantic and idyllic, whereas the latter more appropriately describes the mechanical and impersonal core of the collection. The whole point of my recent work is to grasp for some fundamental fabric that stitches reality together; To reduce human behavior (which we have endowed with a supernatural beauty) to this fundamental fabric, and to weave humanity in with it. The goal is order to the extent that it instigates this insane scramble for meaning. Like, everything is done. Everything has been laid out. What do you mean everything has been laid out? What do you mean we're done? I don't want it to be done. I want to see more! Then we break everything down again. I don't know. Anyways, I am near the end of this collection that I will have out soon. I'm preparing all of the infrastructure to carry out its release. Once this is done, I will be free of those ideas for a while. The music I've been listening to, as well as the content I have consumed, the ideas that I have played with, etc. have all gone stale for me. It has been a couple years of obsessing over these concepts. It began, to some extent, with LIFE HD, although I couldn't really put my finger on it. Arguably, back in high school there were some vague fascinations with the concept. Nights driving with my friends, high off of whatever Snapchat plug weed we could get our hands on. My friend Diego would play Funkadelic, and I would swoon to these hallucinations of dancing cartoon people and colorful patterns; the icons of freeway Americana flitting past the windows. I haven't smoked consistently for a while now. The flashbacks I would get are gone, and some old thought patterns that I believe were suppressed by the drugs are coming back. It's a little scary have them again. I think it means that I'm getting over this phase, and am ready to move on to new ideas. I have some stuff that I have been ideating since early 2021, which I haven't had the chance of fully exploring. I also have an old project that I will hopefully complete this summer that goes as far back as 2019. Additionally, there is the idea that I'll make a low-budget cartoon and put it out on YouTube. I also want to make LEGO stop motion animations. Then, there's this really long-term project that I have put work in since 2017. Suffice to say, I still have a lot of energy and excitement to make my ideas real. I don't know. Anyways, for those who have so happened to come across my blog post before the FCOM release, I give you all of the rollout material so far as a gift. Enjoy.

2/18/2024 0 Comments So much work 2/19/24I just watched Breathless for the first time. Took me back to a period of time between the beginning of junior year 2019 and beginning of quarantine 2020 where I first recognized the natural beauty of my hometown in Northern California. There was this romantic notion of harmony between the sparse smattering of WWII-era farmsteads and the big green of the tumbling backroads by my house. I spent so much time watching all these old French and Italian movies on Blu-Ray, learned how to brew coffee and bake breakfast pastries, frequented film centers, and worked on my own films. It's some pretentious shit, but it was nice to frolic in this Mediterranean fantasy.
I wrote a feature-length film, outlined production, and actually shot a few scenes for it. My friend, Diego, scored what I had. That was between 2019 and 2021. I honestly yearn to rewrite the screenplay and finish the film. It seems so easy because I have the production mapped in the back of my head, and I know the story because I lived it. It would be a Nouvelle-Vague style portrayal of California high school kids getting in over their heads on a serious crime. I love the concept, but the screenplay doesn't do what I would now want a screenplay like that to do. I know exactly what I want from it. I could write a new one in a week if I had the time. I am, however, still working on making sure the Road Trilogy(WT) is good enough to release. The editing is tough, and it may take me longer to finish than initially expected. Additionally, I have two other big projects that I would like to finish. Both are distinct from one another and operate on different mediums. I have already sunk a bunch of time into them, and one of them I have lost touch with given my present circumstances. I am determined to finish all of them to the standard that I expect of them, because they keep a nostalgia alive that I never want to have die. I am afraid that I will lose them. I write all of this, in-part to provide updates on my progress as an artist. Most importantly, I am writing this to collect my thoughts. My roadmap for my works will go as I imagine here: Feb-Apr. - Road Trilogy(WT) -- nearly done, editing phase rn Apr-Aug. - Film project & novel -- film rewrite and principle photography / novel drafting - I don't really care to fully finish them in this time frame. Principle photography on the film is a must though Aug-Dec. - Unannounced project (basically finished and on standby for production atm) .... So on and so forth 1/18/2024 0 Comments New Website (1/18/24)Hello,
I am unsure of how to work with the blog format entirely, but I think I can make it work. I will be using the blog feature to keep anybody who comes through up to date with what kind of stuff I'm working on (this also includes myself). I will now give it a try: The Spring '24 semester is about to begin. I am cautiously optimistic about what will transpire. I am committing myself to staying structured and this hustle is part of that commitment (obviously). I am happy to almost finally christen this website so that I have a place to more easily store my work publicly. This website will be a good first step towards maintaining a healthy output of content, and I have a lot of stuff I would love to publish here: - [Working Title] Road Trilogy: The first release on my website will be a trilogy of short stories totaling 36 pages. These stories are some of my freshest and best works yet (considerably better than any of my "bigger" releases). The trilogy will be released as one project with an extended rollout on Instagram. To prove that I'm not talking out my ass, here are the names & synopses of the stories: - the Devil & the Details : A corporate lawyer gets tangled into an assassination plot and has to navigate the underbelly of the American freeway system to survive it. - please, hear me out : A crackhead tries to save a single father of two from cardiac arrest. - this is what I'm trying to tell you : Monty mistakenly pawns off their deceased grandmother's original copy of Huck Finn and works like a mule to get it back. These stories are basically finished, I just need to work on putting together and planning the rollout so I can get the most amount of eyes on them as I can. I want to get these out by the end of February. Anyways, onto some longer term projects that will probably be taking up some of my time: [Working Title] DRUM : This novel is something I have been working on for about a year now. It will take a lot from Life HD and, as of now, ropes in that story into it among other newer ones that constitute the book. Its release or whether or not it will even be finished is in question. I put this here, because my focus on this novel has had a big influence on the consistency of my release schedule. [REDACTED TITLE] : The last thing I will mention is a longer-form series that I have been working on for nearly 7 years now. I have written 2 Great Gatsby's worth of content for this series, and I hope that this website could be a good place to possibly release chapters on a weekly basis (much like a comic book series). We will see, but, unlike DRUM, this series is something I will make sure I finish. Anyways, those were all the updates on my creative work from me. You may see more stuff on the blog around the release of the Road Trilogy. Maybe some other things as they go. I will play by ear, as should all things be done. If you read this all, thank you, that's pretty dope. Best, Ethan Fonarev |
